An established American Saddlebred training operation in Shelbyville, Kentucky is seeking an experienced and motivated Saddlebred Trainer to join its team.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background working with American Saddlebreds and a solid understanding of developing, conditioning, and preparing horses for competition. We are looking for a talented horseperson who takes pride in producing quality show horses and wants to grow within a professional training operation.
Responsibilities
- Train and condition American Saddlebreds for competition
- Ride and work horses at various stages of training and development
- Develop young prospects and continue the development of seasoned show horses
- Evaluate horses and adjust training programs based on individual needs and progress
- Prepare and present horses at local, regional, and national competitions
- Work with horses competing across multiple Saddlebred divisions
- Monitor horses’ condition, soundness, behavior, and overall well-being
- Communicate health or soundness concerns to management
- Work closely with grooms and other staff to ensure consistent standards of horse care
- Assist with lessons and the development of amateur and juvenile riders as needed
- Prepare and present horses to prospective buyers
- Assist with horse show preparation, setup, and travel
- Maintain tack, equipment, and training areas
- Represent the operation professionally with clients and throughout the Saddlebred community
Qualifications
- Professional experience training American Saddlebreds
- Strong riding and training ability
- Excellent horsemanship and horse-handling skills
- Knowledge of Saddlebred training, conditioning, and show preparation
- Ability to work with young prospects as well as experienced show horses
- Ability to recognize changes in soundness, condition, or behavior
- Dependable with a strong work ethic
- Ability to work effectively with trainers, grooms, clients, and other members of the team
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Willingness to travel throughout the show season
