This is a hands-on management position for an experienced horseperson with a strong background in Thoroughbred reproduction, foaling, broodmare management, and young stock. The successful candidate will work closely with veterinarians, farm management, staff, stallion farms, and owners to ensure exceptional care and efficient management throughout the breeding season and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily management and care of broodmares, foals, and breeding stock
- Manage breeding and foaling schedules throughout the season
- Monitor mares approaching foaling and oversee foaling procedures
- Coordinate reproductive examinations, treatments, and breeding appointments with veterinarians
- Communicate and coordinate with stallion farms regarding breeding schedules
- Monitor mares and foals closely for health concerns and respond appropriately when issues arise
- Maintain detailed breeding, reproductive, foaling, and veterinary records
- Supervise and train breeding barn staff
- Develop daily work schedules and assign responsibilities to team members
- Ensure proper nutrition, turnout, medication, and preventative care protocols are followed
- Assist with neonatal foal care and management
- Oversee weaning and the transition of foals into young-stock programs
- Maintain high standards of barn organization, cleanliness, safety, and biosecurity
- Communicate regularly with farm management regarding mare status, foaling progress, and breeding results
- Coordinate with veterinarians, farriers, transportation providers, and other equine professionals as needed
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional Thoroughbred breeding or broodmare experience preferred
- Previous management or supervisory experience
- Extensive knowledge of equine reproduction, broodmare management, and foaling
- Strong understanding of neonatal foal care
- Ability to recognize signs of illness, injury, reproductive complications, and foaling emergencies
- Excellent horse-handling and horsemanship skills
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping abilities
- Ability to effectively manage and lead a team
- Strong communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding duties associated with horse care
